Tana awoke, annoyed. It felt like a fly had chosen her nose as a landing strip. Swatting at it, she opened her eyes. A gaping mouth opened and closed in front of her—framed with bulging eyes.

“Eek!” she screamed as she jerked her head back and hit something hard. “Get it away; get it away,” she shrieked as she swatted at the water.

“Ouch! Gods, Tana,” Drake shouted just behind her. He had his arms around her. “What under the sea is wrong?”

To her relief, the fish swam away. It looked much smaller when it wasn’t trying to eat her face. “It’s a fish,” she gasped, still trembling as she tried to catch her breath of water. “Oh my gosh, it’s just a fish.”

“Yeah, I’m familiar with that type of creature. Why were you screaming at it?”

“I didn’t scream, I just…well, it was nibbling on my nose!”

Drake chuckled. “I know it’s annoying, but gods, it was only a small, foraging fish. Now, if you’d woken up face to face with a shark, then I’d be worried.”

Tana attempted to turn and face him. Once she had him in her sights, she’d give him a piece of her mind. Drake loosened his grip and allowed her to turn.

“Listen,” she said, “I’ve never slept in the ocean before. And waking up with a fish sucking on my face was a bit disturbing.”

Drake didn’t respond, but the smirk on his face didn’t waver.

She frowned at him. “Weren’t you ever freaked out by a…you know, a land animal?”

His smile vanished replaced by a scowl. Ah ha! He had been. “What was it?”

He shook his head and attempted to swim out of the recliner thingy. “It was nothing.”

“Oh no, you don’t.” She pulled him back. “What was it?”

“I’m sorry for laughing at you.”

Tana broke into a smile and chuckled. When he turned to glare, she subdued her amusement. “Drake,” she said, drawing out his name. “What was kind of animal was it?”

He looked away and sighed. “A cat.”

Holding back her smile became increasingly difficult. “A house cat?” She covered her mouth just as she lost her battle and laughed out loud. “I’m sorry. I know it’s not funny.”

Drake cracked a grin and said, “Actually, I’m told it was pretty funny.”

“You didn’t hurt the poor thing, did you?”

“The cat was fine, but I got a few bruises when I tried to get away from the animal. I fell trying to climb the steps of Xanthus’ house. In my defense, I had no idea whether the creature was poisonous or how sharp its teeth were.”

Tana shook her head. “Alright, how about we agree to keep this between us? I won’t tell anyone you were terrified of a kitty cat.”

Drake frowned at her. “And I won’t tell anyone you were freaked out by a little herring. Speaking of herring, where is that little nibble?” He squeezed out and darted across the room. “There you are.”

“Nibble? You aren’t going to—” Before she could finish her sentence, he snatched the tiny fish out of the water and popped it into his mouth.
